Here are clear-cut answers to several commonly asked questions related to period problems.

Query No1: Is it normal when periods get skipped for a month’s time duration?

Women should not get hassled in case they face period irregularity since even as pregnancy could be a reason for a missed period there are several other factors at play. Being stressed out, too much weight increase or reduction, augmented intensity of exercising and some form of ailment could be other deciding reasons. The usual time in-between periods would range from twenty-one to thirty-five days. In case a woman experiences bleeding more frequently that this range regularly or she has missed her period for 2 months at a shot then these period problems must promptly be discussed with the physician.

Query No2: When a woman gets her periods, it is a sure indication that she is not pregnant.

This is not essentially true since several females might experience blood loss during early phase of their pregnancy. Hence, in case a woman experiences some kind of blood loss which might appear similar to period, it does not automatically assure that a woman has not conceived. One needs to check whether this type of bleeding is progressing similar to a normal period. In case it does not or one is feeling nausea, weariness or experiencing other preliminary symptoms of pregnancy then a woman must undergo a pregnancy test to clear out any surfacing doubts.

Query No3: Are Tampon use causal to TSS or toxic shock syndrome

Though it is occasionally grave; bacteria-linked toxic shock syndrome rarely occurs and cited tampon-related cases have plummeted since the eighties. Specialists advice more frequent tampon changes and the least absorbent nature be worn for cutting the risk. When signs like chills, loose bowels, stomach pains, rashes and fever are being experienced then these could be indications of TSS for which prompt medical assistance must be sought.

Query No4: How does one identify when period flow is quite heavy?

Although blood loss may appear like a lot, yet on an average, a female would lose four to twelve teaspoonfuls of menstrual blood in a single period. In case a woman has used over ten sanitary napkins or tampons during a day’s time or the tampon/sanitary pad is getting soaked on an hourly basis then this is one of those period problems that must be brought to the physician’s notice.

Query No5: Ideally how long must period last?

In majority of the females, the time span that period would last is 3-5 days. For women who experience period that lasts longer than this time must avoid stressing out as period could even last from 2 days to even a week’s time. In case a woman bleeds more than a week’s time in succession then this should be brought to the notice of a physician.

Query No6: What size options does one have in case of tampons?

Based on the level of menstrual flow that could be absorbed, tampons are available in sizes from smallest amount to max – namely, junior, regular-sized, super and super-plus. Irrespective of what size one is using and its absorbent nature, it is imperative that pad or tampon be changed on 4-6 hourly time interval.
